Ronaldo with his history of disallowed goals in international stage

Ronaldo with his history of disallowed goals in international stage

Cristiano Ronaldo was fuming last Saturday at the draw against Serbia. He was frustrated at the referee’s decision which robbed Portugal of the chance to gain maximum points in a World Cup qualifying match.

Ronaldo was sure he had scored a winner for his side just 9 second before the final whistle. Visibly errated Portugese striker was cautioned for his behavior, who later was seen throwing his armband and waving his arms at the final whistle.

Replays clearly showed that indeed the whole of the ball had crossed the whole of the line. However, the linesman of the game at the Serbian side, didn’t see anything else other than a goal line save from the defender Stefan Mitrovic.

Nuno Mendes had sent a long ball that looped over the defenders and perfectly finding his captain who smartly tugged it with the right weight to direct the ball under the rushing goalkeeper Marko Dimitrovic towards the net.

As the ball trickled over the line, Ronaldo was already celebrating which he thought decided the game’s fate. The linesman remained unaffected and as Ronaldo rushed towards him with his arms spread, he was yellow carded for his behavior.

It is a known fact that not every country and every stadium are yet well equipped with adequate modern technologies. And such incidents rather accidents in football have and will happen in football, always.

Dutch referee Danny Makkelie has offered Cristiano Ronaldo and Portugal an apology after disallowing the striker’s goal against Serbia.

This, however was not the first time Portugese star has been denied of deserving goal in the international stage.

We look back to the 2008 qualifying round when the young Manchester United talisman took on Azerbaijan in October 2006. Fans at the stadium were on their feet and sudden eruption of ecstasy as Ronaldo juggle the ball and scored a stunning bicycle kick. The ball hit the crossbar, bounced back up before the goalkeeper grabbed the ball away.

Like on Saturday, the referee saw nothing special about the incident and carried on with the game.

Similarly, in 2010, Portugal were cruising 4-0 past the then all conquering power house Spain. The Juventus star makes mockery of the defender Gerard Pique before lifting the ball over goalkeeper Iker Casilas for one of the greatest goals ever.

Portugal skipper Ronaldo was denied one of his greatest ever goals against Spain

International teammate Luis Nani, however, had another idea. The winger happened to race towards the goal to head the ball in and although the ball had crossed the line even before the former Manchester United colleague touched the ball, the officials took it otherwise and ruled out the goal.

Ronaldo was furious, he started throwing fist in the air, shouting and absolutely incensed.

At that time as well, he smashed the armband on the ground.

But none of the previous incidents had significance on the result of the game or have any impact on Portugal football’s position.

Portugal won the match with Azerbaijan 3-0 and when the incident happened they were already 1-0 up. For the game against Spain, it bore nothing more than a bragging right and even that was won 4-0.

Last Saturday’s match was important. Portugal stands second with four points in Group A of the World Cup 2022 qualifier. Victory in that game would have taken them to top of the table with six points.

Meira thinks his old team-mate was right to question the incorrect decision, but felt he went too far with his protests given his responsibilities as the leader of the national team.

Portugal faces Luxembourg next who are a point behind the joint table toppers in the group.

Ronaldo at 36 years age will probably feature in the grandest stage of all sports for the final time in 2022.

So any slip up obviously will have a big impact and much greater effect on the five times Ballon d’Or winner.
