In Memory of Ila Sharma: Champion of Justice, Voice for the Voiceless
The passing of Ila Sharma is a profound loss to Nepal and to all who believe in ethical public service and planetary justice. A former Election Commissioner (2013–2019), Chevening Scholar, and veteran journalist, Ila played a pivotal role in strengthening Nepal’s democracy—overseeing historic elections under the new constitution and contributing to institutional reform with principle and integrity.
Beyond her professional achievements, Ila was deeply committed to justice in its broadest form. A tireless advocate for the rights of animals and the environment, she believed that compassion must extend to all beings. Her home was a refuge for stray animals, and her life reflected a deep reverence for coexistence.
She will be remembered not only for her leadership, intellect, and service—but for her unwavering belief that a just society is one that protects the voiceless, both human and non-human. Ila Sharma’s legacy calls us to build a more compassionate and inclusive world.
May she rest in peace, surrounded by the love she so freely gave.
